Chrysalis Bodice in Scenic Komon

302.00

Red-orange base with ivory concentric dot (komon) pattern. Features scenes of farmers, homes and bridges in rural Japan. The same-komon motif represents sharkskin, and is one of the oldest known kimono motifs. The complex dying technique that acheives this print was first used on kamishimo, the traditional samurai costume. The pattern is believed to ward off evil and sickness.

Inspired by the novel Jane Eyre, the silhouette of the Chrysalis Bodice is a nod to early Victorian bodices. Made from one-of-a-kind vintage kimono silk hand-picked by the designer, this is the blouse for the woman who wants to wear something no one else has. Designed to be special and singular, the Chrysalis bodice has both a vintage-inspired look and true vintage fabrication, making it the essential heirloom piece.

VINTAGE KIMONO SILK, Japan

With traditional Japanese garments relegated to special occasions in modern Japan,

the country’s number of illustrious silk artisans has dwindled. Vintage silks

of every hue, displaying motifs central to the culture’s visual lexicon, have been

wrapped up and stored away in warehouses. Arcana salvages and repurposes

these precious emblem’s of Japan’s rich textile history. One bolt, or tan, is only

enough to make a single kimono. Thus, each garment made from this vibrant silk

is a one-of-a-kind heirloom showcasing the beautiful craftsmanship of a bygone

Japan.
